Russians distinguish between nationality (народность: narodnost') and citizenship (гражданство: grazhdanstvo). So if you're a citizen of the Russian Federation, you're a россиянини (rossiianin). However, a rossiianin may or may not be a русский (russkii): someone who's ethnically Russian. Conversely, a russkii might not have Russian citizenship.

Not just people from Russia have Russian nationality. In the former Soviet Union countries, people's nationality is determined by one of their fathers'. So even if you reside in Russia you could be any other nationality, but a Russian citizenship. I'm from Kazakhstan, but my nationality is Ukrainian, b/c my dad's nationality is Ukrainian. A lot of my family lives in Russia, but their nationalities are German. I hope you can understand the concept.

i'm no longer able to understand precisely what you prefer to alter. in case you prefer to alter your citizenship, you circulate to Russian embassy or immigration place of work, whenever you're. in case you prefer to alter your call it extremely is undemanding to do it in DMV. My husband did. Now he calls himself Russian.
