This is a funny question. I don't mean that as an insult, but as a statement of personal taste. I have never been to a diner that I thought had a better grilled cheese sandwich than what I make at home.

The first girl's answer here about sums it up. I'd skip the salt and pepper, though, personally. Yuck! (See what I mean about personal taste!?) I would add that what kind of frying pan you use makes a difference, too. A cheap pan that does not distribute the heat well will result in an inferior sandwich. But you have what you have. Just use trial and error until you get it the way you like!

That was answered in the first response. (Minus the salt and pepper.) But if you want one BETTER than you can get at the diner, try buying some quality bread from the bakery...unsliced, crunchy crust, sour dough, jewish rye or pumpernickel. Slice it and add several slices of some QUALITY CHEESE...SKIP the velveeta and kraft stuff...go for a nice sharp cheddar, a soft mozzarella, or a nice slice of Swiss. You will be amazed at what a better grilled cheese sandwich you will have. For variety, add a slice of tomato in the middle. Gourmet grilled cheese all the way!!

Personally I think an electric griddle is the key. I have less than optimal results in a frying pan because the heat isn't even.

If you are stuck with a frying pan you want your pan hot enough so that a couple of drops of water scatter before they evaporate (if they sizzle and turn to steam right away your pan is too hot.) I always use a non-stick pan and butter (spray doesn't produce the nice toasty outside).

Sliced american cheese is my favorite - melts easily and evenly. Serve with a bowl of tomato soup and it's the perfect lunch for a chilly day.

Here's a very simple one.'using mayonaise' instead of butter. It really works and it's fantastic.....you can't taste the mayo.

First- you buy the bread.
Then- get the spray butter(parkay is best)
Then - you need to spray the bread before toasting it on the stove
Then- put the cheese on the bread
Then- Toast it on the stove for however long you like

I've worked in many coffee shops and usually it is margarine on the bread. And a good wheat bread or sour dough, with good cheese makes a yummy sandwich. Try Velvetta cheese, melts good....

medium heat in a good pan. the key - liberally butter the two slices of bread! then put one butter side down, a few slices of your preferred cheese, and the second on top, butter side up. Flip when light brown and crispy. don't forget salt and pepper. yum!

texastoast is best, but if you do not have that any bread will do. make sure to use real butter not margarine. butter one side of bread and put both sides in not stick pan on a med. low heat then when almost toasted add your cheese.
