My 23 month old daughter has what's going around--first vomit, then diarrhea and fever. She won't take any liquids or food since lunch--just wants to sleep. I don't want her dehydrated, but she's just exhausted from being up all night long last night from 3am vomitting til 6am. She went to the pediatrician, had a small lunch with tons of soup broth, had diarrhea once and played until 5pm then napped until now (10pm) and still napping but won't eat or drink. What do I do? I want her to rest and recoup, but I don't want her dehydrated or getting another upset stomach from the Motrin for the fever.

She won't take Pedialyte, either.

I've had it where the kid wants to drink but then throws it back up right after drinking it! She probably just needs her rest right now. Check her lips and see if they are very dry. Look at her skin and see if it looks flushed. Then, try gently pinching her skin and pulling up on it. If it bounces back, then she'll be just fine. She's been sleeping for only 5 hours--chances are, she's sleeping for the night, she just went to sleep earlier than normal and probably will give you "what for" about it tomorrow morning when she's cranky. If you do notice that her lips are very dry and the inside of her mouth is dry as well, her skin is flushed, and her skin doesn't bounce right back, then you need to call the doctor right away. But, it sounds like she should have plenty of fluids still in her and will probably be o.k.

If she doesn't at least drink something soon (go get Gaterade that is what the hospital recommend to me when my toddler had diarrhea, fever and vomit) then you would have to bring her to the hospital. Kids only need fluid when they are throwing up, any doctor will tell you that. If they can't keep the fluid down then you need to bring them in so they will not get dehydrated (the hospital will probably put her on IV). Use infants Tylenol (for kids under two)it is most recommended by doctors and it won't upset tummies as much. If she still doesn't drink anything or just keeps throwing it up (stay away from juice causes diarrhea) within a couple of hours go to the hospital not only to make her feel better soon but for yourself too, put your mind at ease, that is what they are there for. My daughter had the same thing and this is what the hospital told me to do. Is she feeling better yet? Please update us.

For now, just let her sleep. If she wakes and is thristy try to give her some crushed ice or a popsicle. I wouldn't push it at first. She only needs to get about 5 to 10 cc of fluid (1 to 2 teaspoons) of fluid every 15 minutes or so until she starts drinking on her own (well). If she won't take the pedialyte (I wouldn't either!) then try some Gatorade Rain (a lighter, watery taste similar to its Propel line but which comes in the bottle size and shape as the original Gatorade). It tastes good, it stains very little, and it is not totally bad for them, yet has the electrolytes and some carbohydrates to help. I gave that to my son the last time he got sick. It was the only thing he would drink and it kept him hydrated and happy until he begain eating again.
Good luck and best wishes on your daughter feeling better!

Your going to force her to get something in her system..try pedia lyte this is the time when she should take it if she has diarrhea it will keep her hydrated without irratating her stomach. And keep giving her soup broth and slowly work solids back in there starting with crackers and bread the baked or boiled meats w/o seasoning really or at least very little.

u are right to not want her to get dehydrated stay away from sugary dirnks (apple juice 2) because that can make diarrhea worse make sure she sips water or keep a sippy cup of a pedialight (sp) all day ......things like bread or crackers will help soak up all the mucus in her stomach and is easy on the stomach and broths really good too

Yeah i know what you mean! I only tell family and friends that im comfortable with that im still breastfeeding my almost 2 year old son. The only one in my family that went past the 12 month mark was my mom, when she was breastfeeding my little brother. Its funny when people ask "when did you stop breastfeeding?", I tell them i still am! Their reactions vary... few people were like "That is great!! Breast milk is so good for your child" and others give that " O_o" look and say something like "he doesnt like food?" LoL. OF COURSE he eats table foods! I think people need to remember the REAL purpose of breasts, they're not just sex objects and breastmilk is good for your child even if the child is past the 12 month mark. I think maybe others ASSUME, breastfeeders dont introduce table foods to their children or something?

you should take her to the hospital. the same thing is happening with my friend's son. he's only 13 months old and hasn't eaten for 2 days. and vomits about 5 times a day and having really bad diarrhea. she took him to the hospital and they gave him fluids from an I.V. she still hasn't called me back yet. so, she must be busy caring for her son.
the best thing to do for you child when you're unsure is to go to the emergency room.

WELL WHEN MY KIDS WOULD GET SICK LIKE THAT I WOULD PUT PEDILYTE IN A MEDICINE SYRINGE AND GIVE THEM 5ML OR 1 TEASPOON EVERY 30 MINUTES OR SO. IT HELPS KEEP THEM HYDRATED WITHOUT OVER DOING IT AND CAUSING MORE VOMITING OR DIARRHEA. IF YOUR DAUGHTER IS SHOWING MAJOR SIGNS OD DEHYDRATION THOUGH YOU SHOULD TAKE HER TO THE ER. NOT SOMETHING YOU WANT TO MESS WITH.
