If you are wanting to go down the prescribed medication route, then Sertraline is excellent for helping with anxiety and depression. You should notice an improvement within the first week, but like all prescribed medication, it will come with side effects - but fewer than others i've known.
If you want the natural herbal method, then I would suggest St Johns Wort. You take these three times a day and should notice benefits within three weeks - but for health reasons,do not take this alongside other prescribed antidepressants. Kalms tablets are also good for helping to relieve the symptoms of stress and worry. They contain Valerian extract which is known to have antidepressant properties.
You can purchase St Johns Wort and Kalms over the counter at most local pharmacies and they are relatively cheap to buy, usually between £2.50 - £4.00. I certainly would recommend them.

Hi, I'll tell you about my situation if it helps. I have had anxiety and depression for a few months it was brought on by some health worries I had, got panic attacks out of the blue which made anxiety worse. I'm on Fluoxetine, I expect you've already tried this as it is the first drug they will usually try. This is because the drug has a long half life meaning it is easier to get off off when stopping. The thing is no one drug will be the same for everyone, what might affect you might not affect me and vice versa, its for that reason that you need to consult your doctor who will help you. Many side effects will subside after a few weeks of starting or increasing your dosage. Its therefore worth if you can to ride out the first weeks. If your still uncomfortable they can be changed. Apart from medication also think about changing your lifestyle as this is what is fuelling your problems. Change your diet, get new hobbies, do new things, make plan, try yoga, read self help such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and generally try to understand that your problems can be overcome once you understand them. Depression is not a disease its purely a habit of thinking, habits can be changed trust me. Also ignore what people have said about Marijuana, it wont help, it'll make you more anxious and its usually people who regularly use it that are the ones who have such problems. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I wasn't going to reply as I don't know of any, and was interested to see if anyone else knew of any.
Somebody has suggested Sertraline. I got put on Sertraline a couple of weeks ago and had the first one before I went to bed. The next day, I thought I had flu or something! I felt really sick and couldn't eat anything until late afternoon, had stomach pains, had headache, was really dizzy, and felt more depressed than I felt before being given the medication. It was horrible! I hadn't read the side effects before I took them but I seemed to have just about every one of them! I didn't give them long enough to work out if I had lost any sex drive and did not have sex so I don't know if I had lost the ability to orgasm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still, I suppose they must work for some people!
Back to the Doctors in the morning! I don't think I am that anxious anyway! Just depressed I think!
Good luck on your quest! I will watch with interest. xxx

klonopin and ativan are two of the most commonly perscribed medications for anxiety. I've been on both and both have side effects - but I had less side effects with klonopin. Since you only need it occasionally either woul d be fine. Both have the usual drowsiness effect - although I don't even notice it with klonopin any more. It wears off if you take it for a while.
There are others but if you're on valium you probably still need something stronger - either of those will have lower side effects than valium and will probably work fine.

If you live in one of the 11 states that allows it, I would recommend seeing a psychiatrist about medical marijuana. I guess there have been some reports of negative effects on anxiety issues but from personal experiences and reports I have read it has great healing powers in many situations.
If it isn't legal where you live, you might look into Valerian Root instead. You can buy it at Wal-Mart for a few bucks. It helps calm me down and also sleep peacefully when need be.

The best anxiety medication is proper physical-mental rest and a good selection of diet. Cutting down alcohol intake will also help.
Choose some fresh fruits and high protein diets, will envigorate your stamina thereby increasing your body energy.
A regular banana, milk and steak will be a simple combination that you can take.
Food supplement or daily dose of multivitamins will help.

Your doctor should be recommending medication to you, if indeed any medication is desirable or required, not answers guys, many of whom have a poor GCSE in woodwork!
Low affect may be non-pathological, we really should not medicalise unnecessarily, or it may be appropriate to manage it with counselling or psychotherapy. Medication may be a valid option, if, after a detailed consultation you doctor, with his expert training decides that it may be. There is however not necessarily a pill to make us happy all the time.

Go to the health food store and get some Holy Basil. Then go to the library and check out this book. Then go see your doctor.
