Who should I call and what all should I tell them? Is there any certain universal # to call that works in diff states? What should I do about the vehicle? I've never driven a long distance away from home by myself, and I'm paranoid about something like this happening. Anyone ever been in this situation and/or know what I should do if I was?

things to keep in your car in case of emergency.
a big bottle of water
flashlight and extra batteries
a blanket
jumper cables
an atlas
a first aid kit
duct tape and a swiss army knife if you want to be able to handle anything :)
a birght orange emergency flag and a flare (found at auto shops in emergency kits)
spare tire/jack

i highly recommend becomming a AAA member. You pay an annual fee and then you can call their 800 number antime and they will come to pick you up, tow you to a station or jump start your car or change a tire if need be.
whereever, wherever. so worth the cost.

first off, the odds of you being on some road out in the middle of nowhere with no one passing by is very very very small. if that happens and the weather is bad, stay in your car. if the weather is good and you don't remember a close town you passed by, check your map for the closest town and start walking. if there is truly no town nearby - stay with your car. if you drove there, odds are someone else will too.

call 911 everywhere.

if your car dies on a busy road try to get it of to the side, put your flare or flag out, but then get away from it. if it gets hit that sucks, but if you get hit that sucks more.

good luck - i'm sure you'll be fine!

at the starting up, what number abandoned highways are you able to imagine of? if you're talking about interstate highways, they are very heavily patrolled with assistance from state infantrymen or highway patrol. On 2 separate activities my automobile broke down on an interstate in Arizona (in the darkish no a lot less), and in both circumstances the Arizona state police stopped to verify what replaced into up in below 5 minutes! (i did not even call them). Now in case your automobile breaks down on some backwater county highway and also you ensue to be waiting to get a cellular telephone signal, they're going to deliver a sheriff out in case you insist upon it. yet fairly, what are you going to inform the officer even as he receives there? in case your life/belongings isn't in risk, in simple terms call a tow truck. in case you won't be able to get a cellular telephone signal, then you definitely'll could walk, some distant county roads at the instantaneous are not nicely patrolled. besides, if you're apprehensive about it, in simple terms shop your automobile nicely maintained. And stick with the interstates.

The Police are the first people you should call, especially if you are in unfamiliar territory. I don't think there is a national 911 system, however, cellphones do default to the local 911 call center in the area that you in.

The local sheriff's department can tell you that law enforcement is in the business of helping people. Dial 911 or better yet 411 for information and get the sheriff's department for the area or mile marker(know what that is?).

call 911!!! They should help u get home or to a nearby place. But if u r in another state next to ur state just stop and get a riad map and hopefully u'll get home. It depends how the cops r in that state and if they r crooked cops.

Serious emergency: 911

other situation: 411, and ask for either state police or tow truck/whatever service you might need.
