It is a fairly large organization and I don't personally know anybody in the department to ask them, I need somebody with their expertise to give a talk at an employee meeting in May.
People do it all the time but they usually ask a friend, etc.

You could simply send an e-mail to the person in charge of that department and explain that you'd like to invite someone from that department to give a talk. Something like this might work:

Dear :
We would like to invite someone from your department to speak at our employee meeting on about . We appreciate your department's expertise on . Is there anyone that you could recommend to give a talk for us?
Sincerely,


Then, when the person returns your e-mail and gives the name of someone in the department, contact that person:
Dear :
recommended you as someone who could give a talk on . We would like to invite you to give a talk on at our employee meeting on at

I work in a hospital where there are over 2000 employees. Send an in-house email to the supervisor or manager of the department you'd like to have at your meeting.

Find a point of contact within that organization who can tell you what channels to go through to get the speaker to come to your function. Then call the person in question to hammer out details: When, Where, What occaison, Audience, and compensation (if any).
