I know that I have spoken to people who are contemplating suicide. And after speaking with them, they have turned from that wasteful intent. So in a practical sense, my words have restored life to those people.
On the other side, I have heard of some who have taken their lives for the matter of words, either rightly or wrongly understood.
This Scripture has a spiritual sense too. The Words of God are the words that lead us to eternal life. Jesus equated what he said with life when he said, "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life" (John 6:63).
Peter shows that he understood this when he confessed, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68).
And Paul:
Romans 10:17 -- So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
And John, once again, shows how important words are to life:
Revelation 22:19 -- and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life...
Words, enlivened by "the power of the tongue" are incredibly important. Though I do not yet understand that power, I respect it and study it.

Our use of the tongue has the power to make our eternity one of Life or one of death. Please read these verses and understand what they are telling each of us.
Life:
Romans 10:10 - For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Revelation 2:11 - He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
Revelation 20:6 - Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Death:
Revelation 20:14 - And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Revelation 21:8 - But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Using the bible to persuade people to believe in Jehovah and in his son Jesus Christ is a use of the tongue that will help someone onto the road of eternal life here on a paradise earth where there will be plenty of satisfying work to do.

Well i believe that its referring to the spiritual form of life and dead, with your tongue you have the power to either encourage or discourage a persons faith in God, which can either revive or destroy their spirituality, so in that sense in our tongues we hold the power of spiritual life and death. Also with reputations, we can either kill someones repuation, or build it up and give it life. We can kill somebodys day with a bad word, just crush their entire spirit, so the tongue is an incredibly powerful thing, so powerful that it is compared with the extreme of having the power giving or taking life and death. So in a way i suppose it can have a double meaning.

I would refer to James to describe what I think it means.
James 3:6 and 10 "The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell...with the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be."

Jesus said that it is no what we put in our mouth that corrupt us, its what comes out of our mouth (or finger tips here at R&S). In James we are told that the one who has control of their tongue is the perfect person.
We say things that cause harm to others and we can also say things that lift others up and help them.
He who refreshes others, will himself be refreshed.
What a person says with their tongue, is a view of what is in their heart!
watch your tongue!

Has anybody ever said something to you that really cut to you the quick, it wounded you deeply and you never forgot it? That's what it's talking about.
