This is old joke that people play on others. Someone will ask " Have you ever been Snipe Hunting " and the person will answer no. Then they will say " Well they only come out at night ". They will tell you you need a bag ( cloth ) to catch it in and that it runs fast so you really have to be on the look out. So one night a few pranksters will take you out in the woods and tell you to stay there while they go with their flashlights and chase the snipe out into your direction. Well you will be sitting or standing there for a while because while your out there in the dark one of two thing is going to happen. One they are going to drive off and leave you out in the woods. Two they will get in the car or truck and wait for awhile then come back and ask you if you caught the snipe and when you tell them no they will start to laugh and then tell you it was all a joke because there are no such things as a snipe. I know because this trick was played on my brother, cousin and my dad use to play it on his friends in the old days. So please if you are being asked to go snipe hunting just say no. WELL A YOUNG NIMROD ON THE TRAIL OF THE ELUSIVE AND CUNNING SNIPE.
A bit of helpful info yes they are real but snipe hunting of the critter is somewhat a myth Sort of like asking your girl freind if she would like to spend the night on the beach to watch the submarine races, doesnt mean there is no subs, but its taken clearly out text i cant emagine why anyone would want a snipe any more than going to a hummingbird roundup
it has long been considerd in the southren states to be the origin of the phrase (left holding the bag)
Happy hunting i have to get ready for the races

Yes. Snipes are real - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snipe
Snipe hunting, however, is a "right of passage" joke played on the unsuspecting.. the idea being that you take the poor victim out into the marsh, swamp, woods, fields.. with a bag and a flashlight and tell them to stand be ready to catch the snipe while the others herd the snipe to them. The "victim" is often asked to make some strange sound with attracks the snipe. Then everybody leaves the poor guy out there alone to eventually figure out he's been had.
If, however, Snipe are a valid game bird in your state, all I can say is ."Save the Snipe!!"

snipe or snipes.
Any of various long-billed shore birds of the genus Gallinago or Capella, related to the woodcocks and sandpipers, especially the common, widely distributed species G. gallinago or C. gallinago.
Any of various similar or related birds.
If you are going to go snipe hunting, the only real way it to do it at a seashore in the daytime.
Being told to do it at night, in bushes, you are being joked.
