I'm a dentist.

I've used these products before. Obviously these allograft materials, having come from other humans, have been sterilized completely through various methods (I don't know which methods, nor is it that important. I know they're sterile.) The cellular components of the bone have been removed, and all that's left is the mineralized components (as I understand it).

Certainly, no product is 100% safe. Any time you take material from one person and put it into another person there is the risk of transmitting disease. Of course, this risk is exceedingly small. And I emphasize the word "exceedingly". With most allogeneic bone graft materials, all they want is the bone matrix structure, not the cellular and "live" components. The graft material serves as a matrix--a framework, if you will--in which your own cells can enter and start building living bone.

The membrane that was used, on the other hand, was almost certainly a synthetic product.

Either way, I use these products comfortably on my patients and I would have absolutely no qualms about having these materials used on me (if I needed such work).

Dr. Albert and Nebula are correct. I would only add that there are two types of membranes - both synthetic. Some, such as Gore-tex, have to be removed after the bone graft has healed. Others can remain in place and they will be absorbed by your body. I just don't want you to wonder why you did or didn't have the membrane removed if someone else says that will or will not need it removed. There are different kinds of membranes and each doctor uses the type he or she thinks is best for your situation.

You'd have to describe which bones you're using. There are Healthy Edibles and Greenies, which are intended to be consumed, and then there are nylon bones which aren't to be consumed. Assuming you're refering to the edible sort, you'd have to take into account the ingredients and what works with your dog's diet. Some edibles are laden with salt and sugar, and should be given sparingly. Some edibles are made of shredded rawhide (which makes me slightly nervous) and should also be given sparingly. If you have a picky eater, let them decide how many. If you have a scavenger (such as a lab like mine who thinks drywall is a treat) you'll have to be the judge. Go with common sense, watch their behaviour, monitor the poop. If they poop too much or don't poop at all, chances are things arent quite right. Maybe you should check with people who have a similar breed as your dog? Age is also a factor - puppies and older dogs have more sensitive stomachs... Sorry for no exact answer. My 9 month old, 55lb Lab gets a Greenie or Healthy Edible about once every other day and works on a rubber chewie of sorts (or my wall) the rest of the time. He LOVES huge carrots. Gets the chewing out of his system, keeps his teeth clean. We don't give them to him late at night though, so he doesn't have sugar in his mouth all night. Hope this is helpful.

I had that done about 12 years ago, I haven't come down with anything. It's a pretty common proceedure.

LINDA,
THE BONE IS VERY SAFE AFTER ALL THE PROCEDURES ARE DONE TO IT. YOU WILL NOT GET THE DISEASES YOU FEAR. THIS IS BEST ASSIMILATED BY THE BODY. ITDOES NOT CONTAIN GENETIC MATERIAL, SUCH AS DNA.
THE MEMBRANE IS SYNTHETIC. THERE ARE VARIOUS TYPES, THE MOST COMMON IS GORTEX, AS THAT WHICH SOME WINTER COATS,GLOVES. ETC., CONTAIN.
