It varies but about 3 feet is generally good but, stand where you feel comfortable. Look for signs of discomfort in the other person. If they appear comfortable, you're probably alright. If they appear uncomfortable, you should probably move back a little but don't be obvious about it.

It depends on who the other person is and the circumstances. If you are with a lover, you would probably like to be very close to each other. If there are too many people around you such as when you both are in a crowded bus/train/elevator, you wont have much of a choice in deciding on the space. In a conference room or classroom too, the space is probably predetermined.
If you want to talk something confidential or relating to business, maybe you would like to whisper in the other person's ears!
If you are talking to a person of the opposite sex and don't know him/her well, you should keep a distance of 3 or 4 feet, if possible, so that the other person is comfortable.
If one has a choice, then I think one should keep at least 3 feet away, and talk softly, but at the same time loud enough for only the other person to hear you, without letting others know what you are discussing.
All people have bad breath all the time, whatever they may do to avoid it! People do try breath mints or gum to temporarily mask their bad breath. (Many people wouldn't even admit that they have bad breath.) Hence it is most advisable to avoid embarrassment to the other person by one's bad breath offending him/her, by keeping a safe distance of 3 feet or so. If one is able to mask his/her bad breath while talking to another, then this distance can be reduced to say 2 feet. No one would like to have saliva or the bad breath of the other person hitting him/her during a talk! I suppose it is mutual!

It depends on who the someone is. When I'm attracted to someone I tend to stand up close and personal.

2 feet is the recommended length because you are close enough to let the person know that you are paying attention to them and that you are communicating with just them but not too close that you are in their face.

3-4 ft close enough to hear and not so close to be a threat.

Arms length or outta spitting zone.
don't you hate when spit flys on your face when someones talking to you. And you have to pretend you have a itch to wipe it off.
