It isn't as simple as many of the people who answered this question seem to think. The Muslims of Narathiwat, Yala and Patani are not ethnic Thais, but Malays with their own language. Those three Southern provinces were independent sultanates before being annexed by Thailand in the 19th century, who then commenced to rule them with a heavy hand. The Muslims there have never been happy under Thai rule and this discomfort predates the rise of terrorism by more than a century. So please get your facts straight before condemning and judging an oppressed minority, who only want to practise their religion, speak their own language and prevent their children from being brainwashed by their foreign rulers.

Independence of these southern provinces will not help in any way, shape, or form! It will worsen the situation at best. It will not solve anything.
Since I was present during one of the bombings (in Had Yai) I have been reading articles and been keeping up with the current news on this insurgency as well as the Government's status.
I am not certain there is a foreign entity involved, could be?. I suspect it is a national of muslim background, who knows?? I am aware that the violence in these areas has been going on for at least a few centuries.
IMO, Muslims in these areas are severly discriminated against by the Govt. They do not have the same rights as your typical Thai Buddhist. This creates trouble alone. I have heard that one of these provinces submitted a plea to the former PM - Thaksin for assistance and they were ignored. Additionally, in 2004 there was a massacre where 100 people were killed (Tak Bai - checkout youtube) because the Govt. suspected they were terrorists. They just randomly took 100 people at a peaceful protest and executed them!
IMO, this was their lowest point. If the Govt. turns on you where are you going to go? This created an opportunity for either a foreigner or Thai/muslim to step up and direct people toward a different direction. Here it seems like Independence can be part of the solution, but the real solution I feel is to find the network that is responsible for all this violence and I feel there is more than one which makes it even more complicated. I feel that a war at some point in the near future is inevitable. They are already attacking schools and killing children! I do not think the Govt. is going to tolerate much more. It is going to be a very long time, if not, never when there is peace in this region - sadly!

These militants are using unorthodox tactics to try to bend the will of the Government to achieve their objective of establishing a separate state. Should they be allowed to have it this way? Are they a legitimate entity in the first place to ask for this? From what I know, the local Muslims have been living without any issues for many years with the other faiths around. With the emergence of Al Queda, this has escalated to what it is now. So the issue of ceding the land is not a consideration. It has to be established by proper governance or the people will suffer. If an Islamic state is established, will the rest suffer? Think of the Talebans in Afganistan. It was too militant even for the Muslims.
So there is no win-win situation until these militants can be removed. And they are suspected to be foreigners, not locals.

Ok, so I admit it, I laughed out loud when I read your question. But I'm not going to say bad things. You have your view and you are welcome too it. Personally, I do not share your view. However, I am tolerant of other people's views. That's one of the things I love about Thailand; there is a lot of freedom and a lot tolerance and acceptance of the views of others and their lifestyles and cultures. Would this level of personal freedom be part of "a new muslim nation"? Somehow I doubt it. Probably what would happen is that people would run away to live in Thailand just like they did from Loas and Cambodia when an extemist government took over; in those cases communist and they also have done from Burma.
If Thailand is so bad why do people keep coming to live here?
What this is really about is expanding Malaysia into Thailand. Didn't the British do enough of that already? I seem to remember that the first governor of Penang had his eye on Phuket (and even married one of the residents.) However, I am sure that you know more about Malaysian history than me.

No way, Thai will fight to the last drop of their blood. This is a kingdom and a one state country, no one can divide or separate it.
The militants are killing innocent people no matter what religions they are. With their immoral operations, they just want to create the fear among residents so that they can achieve their objective. I believe they got some supports from foreign organizations or countries. Their operations need large sum of money, hundreds of million dollars. They should be blamed by the world community for their crimes committed.
If we bow to their demand, it'll be a precedent case which will affect all countries. How's about China, U.S.A., UK, India, Australia, Singapore, Mynmar, Vietnam, New Zealand Malaysia etc. Should the Red Indian claim the land from US? Should Malay or Indonesia claim the land from Singapore? Should the Sakai claim the land from Malaysia and sultans? Should Minority in China claim their lands and establish new nations? How's about Tibet, Mongolia, Taiwan etc. What the chaos the world politics will look like?

I think only you said it win-win
Where is my house located then? I am in there location. If you said just let the area released to them, Where will i live after that? Where will i work after that? Where will be my field for gardening, the trees already plant and growth every day. How can i move it accompany with me?
PLease do not jusify like this, if I ask where is your home? And i will bother your home living, and cut your house cage, bomb your house roof. And then you will move or go to see the lawyer to claim this. Be thinking yourself in the situation and try to make the world in piece.
Thank you

The Islamic fundamentalist, terrorist trash in Yala and elsewhere in southern Thailand should be sought out and unmercifully destroyed. And whiny liberals need to shut up about stroingarm tactics used to quell these butchers or else be treated as terrorist sympathizers!

Are you naturally this silly, or did you take lessons? Were you in a car accident and get a head injury?
By your own argument, The entire United States should bow to the will of the terrorists who flew planes into the World Trade Centre.
One of their demands, I believe, was that the entire US convert to Islam. (Of course, they neglected to mention whether to be Shiite, Sunni, or Kurdish...)
So, when are you planning a pilgrimmage to Mecca? The Hajj?

lol. I think the Ramadan Section should be banned. Is that an option? Well, thankfully there aren't too many Shariah run places so let's just keep it that way, ok.
