It all is dependant on your states law. In the state I came from, you could drop the insurance, and keep the plates, but you had to go in person to cancel the registration as well. In that state, insurance was mandatory. But again, it all depends on your particular state and the insurance laws.

Depends on the state you live in! In NY State the only way to prove that you are not still using the plates is to turn them in to Motor Vehicle. Failure to do so can lead to suspension of license, major fines and surcharges!

Best to check with the division of your state's government for the exact regulations. In NY State, 8 months "driving with out insurance" (assuming that you cancelled the insurance on your bike after you sold it) might equal $8.00/per DAY charges + fines and surcharges (this is what they charge for cars, bikes might be (and hopefully are) less).

Bottom line? Get thee to your State's licensing agency and find out where you stand!

When you finally get up to the window at DMV, they will tell you what you have to do. They won't arrest you or anything, they are people just like us. They will ask you if you have a license, a car, or bike, and then tell you what you have to do to get legal. They are very non-threatning, and though they work for the state, none of them are trying to get you in trouble. Especially in Oregon, Washington state, and California. I'm not sure about the east or midwest. Good luck.

in Alabama you keep the plates the insurance company can report you dropped your insurance and the state will send you a letter saying you were picked at random..but you wernt .
your insurance company told them you dropped on this date,
and they want you to send proof that you had insurance on ....this date if not they suspend the plates and make you pay 100 dollar reinstate fee on the vehicle

Where I live insurance is not mandatory under most conditions, that is, not auditory unless you have some kind of restriction like from drunken driving conviction or if you has some kind of accident and have to prove financial responsibility, under normal circumstances you don't have to have insurance. Of course if you have a car loan or lease the terms of your loan or lease may require insurance.
