It is not attempted burglary.
It is trespassing and vandalism though.
Burglary happens when a person breaks into a house or building illegally.
Attempted Burglary happens when a person makes a clear attempt to TRY and enter a house of building illegally.
If the boys had tried to use their tools on the windows or doors then it would be Attempted Burglary. But, in the case you mention there is no proof that they meant to break into that house. They could have the tools for other reasons, as strange as they may be. To prove a case you need to prove intent. Just saying that someone might do something, or that they may have intent is not enough there has to be evidence of it.
Now if the boys had told you that they were going to break into that house then that would make the crime Attempted Burglary. It would also make the case one of your word vs. the word of 5 other guys; so more proof would be needed. But, even if you found their footprints in the flower garden outside of a window that doesn't mean the crime was burglary, it could have only been one of being a Peeping Tom (which is a sexual crime), it could also have been a case where someone needed help and they came to the window seeking that help.

IT could be an attempted burglary charge---their INTENT was to break in and steal, they had the tools, they planned it but they didn't do it.
I'm thinking it could stand up in court. Sure.
The breaking of the windows, well that could be criminal damage to property right off the bat.

It's vandalism. because they changed their minds before they even tried to break a window or open a door then there was no attempt at burglary.

That doesn't sound like a supportive friend! Were you drunk at 7:15pm? I don't see how the burglar could have known that - unless it was Derren Brown or someone..Maybe you could make steps to secure your house - alarms, security lights, self defence class, maybe a lovely big dog? I live in a house with 2 big dogs..They are the sweetest things in the world but if the hear a noise they will bark like mad which makes me feel safe if I'm home alone. A dog could be a crimbo present for your little man but if well trained and looked after properly the dog could help you both feel safe in the house - or you could just move?

well i guess it depends on the judge they get because if they have the tools and all they coudl probably easily be charged with attempted burglary or at least pre mmeditated burglary fi that exsists, besides, they will be charged with destruction of property at the least and if it was my house they woudl have left in an ambulance after i ither shot them or went outside and beat in their skulls with a beautiful piece of lead pipe, but thats just me

Vandalism, criminal trespass, and if they get caught with the tools, probably attempted burglary

Criminal mischief for the windows, no attempted burglary because there was no overt act for the burglary.

did you actually see them outside? If not how did you know they had tools ready?
You can report it yes for attempted burglary and maybe a seperate charge for breaking the windows.
Thing is as long as you know who did it?
