I have heard that tears are just a way that the cats eye flushes out debris. This can be a problem with ling haired cats because the tears have no where to go, and bacteria can build in the corner of the eye. Cats are known to be very secretive when they are in pain, it is a natural instinct so that predators can not tell when they are weak.

After working at a vet that did declawing and watching the cats come out of anesthesia and seeing tears roll down their face...I would say YES! My mama cat has tears that pop out when she gets scolded.

The only time I've seen my cats tear up is when they are not in pain. Usually it means they have something in their eye and it naturally waters to wash it out.

Cats don't show pain. If their behavior changes dramatically, it could me something is wrong with them interally, like peeing outside their box might mean they have a UTI. My Siamese walks with a limp sometimes because of a luxating patella, and while it hurts me to watch him walk, he doesn't whimper.

Cats' eyes will "tear" or water for a number of reasons, but they are all medical, not emotional. They include eye irritation from a speck of dust, a scratch from another cat, or allergy. They also include contagious diseases, such as upper respiratory infections. Clogged tear ducts (believe it or not) can also result in tearing.

While cats certainly do have emotions such as grieving or depression, they express them in different ways other than crying (lethargy, withdrawal, disinterest in food are a few examples.)

My first two cats lived to 23 and 25, never saw either of them cry other than buildup from too much snooze time or getting smoke in their eyes from sitting too close to the fire place.

Got 3 others now, had them for about 3 years, haven't noticed them cry yet.

I wouldn't think animals cry from pain, that's more an emotional effect. It would have to come from some type of physical response of their body to protect their eyes, smoke, irritation, etc...

Cats do have tear ducts.

They may tear up to get rid of some irritant in the eye.

If she does this a lot, take her in - she may have an infection of some kind.

I don't think they do it if their "leg hurts" or something like that.

I'm not really sure. I would like to say no, they don't because they don't cry that often. On the other hand i'd like to say yes. This all depends i think on how clean her eyes are? Do you check her regularly for hairs in her eyes and dirt etc.
