My dad died years ago and I have to admit it screwed me up for a long time. I was twelve and for years I wanted to do good by him and make him proud of me.

You have to let go and keep living your life for yourself. You still have to get up everyday and go to work, or school, whatever it is you do. It hurts like hell but eventually it gets easier but it never goes away fully and it shouldn't. If it was someone that you truley cared about you'll always carry them with you. There are times I wish he was still around. I'd like him to see his grandaughter just once, but I can only live my life for me and my family not a dead man. It may sound cold but that's the truth of it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is you have to get to a point of closure. You have to get to that point where it matters but it's not as important as it once was. We'll all deal with it differently and get there in our own way but the outcome will always be the same. We move on.

Get back to a regular routine as soon as possible. Keep busy. Remember all the good things and if you can, make sketches of special places and things from your past. These will bring good memories as you look at them. Think of them as being in a place where they are happy and healthy and in no pain.

Talk to people who have had the same experiences. This will make one feel that he is not the only one suffering after all. Also, spend time with other family members and comfort each other.

When my Grandfather passed away i kept one of his flannel shirts he wore frequently. When i start thinking about him and wish he was still here i snuggle up in his old flannel shirt... it kinda gives me a sense of him being here with me.
