i've never used jigs for bass fishing so i'm wondering how often you use jigs. What colors do you use when? is it important to use trailers? do you use jigs in open water or in a lot of cover?

You know, I don't ever use them. I never have. I should try them, but I would rather use worms, crankbaits and such.

Jigs are a search and destroy lure. Cast it from every angle into the water, and if there is a bass there, then they will play around with it. Take a few more casts into the same area, and if they are hitting it short, then switch to a different bait. If nothing bites in the initial ten minutes of jig work, move on to a different spot.

Jigs are one of the oldest and most reliable lures. They will find the fish for you. Period.

Hope it helps.

Jigs can be utilized in many ways while bass fishing the best way to discover these uses is to do some research and/or talk to the anglers at your local fishing area. Ask them what has been succesful for them at that spot and if do it the same as them you will be more likely to reel in a lunker, this is due to the fact that fish habits do not change over time.
While jigs are extreamly helpful you cant limit yourself to only jigs. Think of useing things like plastics, crankbait, spinnerbait, jerkbait, jitterbugs, topwaters, crawdads, minnows, hotdogs, crickets etc. If you arent having any luck with something try somthing else or try it with a different color and/or technique of reeling it in.

jigs and soft plastics are my favorite way to fish.
i would rather tie on a jig or a tube than a crank bait or a spinnerbait.
trailers are a very important part of a jig.they offer more or less action of a jig.they either slow or speed up the fall of the jig.the purpose of a trailer on a jig is supposed to stand up and make it look like a crawdad.
in murky water or water with color as i like to fish i allways use a blue/black jig with a blue/black trailer.clear water i will use a green color like green pumpkin or pumkinseed.with matching trailer.
i use jigs year round, successfully i might add.
there are times when i will use a jig with little cover.mainly around creek channels with stumps, but mostly around alot of cover.flipping or piching to rock ledges or laydowns is my fav way to fish jigs.
something else u might want to try is tubes.if pitching or flipping i will peg the sinker tofish it like a jig.

I use jig and pig combinations all year long. Favorite colors are black/blue with a blue zoom super chunk trailer in stained water, black/black and green pumpkin in clearer water. Trailers are important considering you are trying to mimic a crawfish.I prefer some type of cover but they can be used in open water. Jigs catch pigs!! Good luck and hold on tight.

My answer might seam weird, but it works for me. I Use a white, yellow, or black rubber crappie jig with either a gold or silver spoon (minus hooks) tied about 6" away from the jig. this works wrather well in open deep murky water. don't ask how i found this to work for me. I think it was boredom, but discovered it about 16 years ago. and I have been using it successfuly since.

year round shad colors or crawfish color let the bass tell you what they want; yes trailers help speed up or slow down the jigs fall; heavy cover is your best bet
