I think 99% of all Muslims are average joes like us. They go to work, look after their kids, and like to have safe neighborhoods. But there is a 1% group that act like spoiled children and have to have things their own way- and those are the ones filling the TV screen. I perceive that the fight between church and state has yet to be resolved in most Muslim countries (Turkey is a notable exception).
A lot of what I get is from speaking with Muslims and Arabics. From the ones I have known, they are a great group of guys. I've spoken with Iranians, Jordanians, Lebanese, and Egyptians. What is very interesting is how they interrelate with each other- they are far from a unified front.
You simply cannot go by press releases and TV soundbites. That is far too little information to base sound judgements.

In my case, from the actual visit to a muslim country (Turkey).
Media have a lot to do with the opinion of people about islam, I guess they plant prejudices or real information in the minds of people, they have to be responsible. In this case, when they inform about terrorism...
My view on the islam is: it is a different religion from mine, and that is enough for it to deserve respect...I think badly of any fundamentalist that cannot tolerate another point of view, but everyone can believe what they wish about God (or Allah)

some media why is all the news a lie and the dead are just a propaganda trick . No ? I think we pretty well can tell what lies the media harbor thanks to civic minded people who care and the advantage of the internet. I didn't trust in George Bush or the obvious media omissions and slants . One can how ever if aware sometimes glean from between the lines .

Media does have a negative effect on common perception. But after reading the quran , the hadeeth & spending a bit of time with the fundamentalists, i decided its not really for me. Islam , like every other religion has its flaws.

I believe in the media as much as as believe in pink unicorns. Most Muslims are no different than you or me. They want to pay the bills and raise a family.
People are too gullible.
