I just went through this last week (removing a wall paper border). While I was scraping it off some of the drywall paper was peeled off too. I used a light coat of spackle. And before I painted the wall I used a damp terry cloth towel to smooth out the spot. Good Luck!

If the damage is really, really bad and you can't repair it the wall the way the others have said I have another idea. Apply the drywall joint compound with a trowel in sort of criss-cross strokes. You don't need to cover all the wall, just enough to give it texture. Let it dry about 24 hrs and prime/paint it.

You can also stir the paint into the joint compound and trowel it onto the wall a little heavier so it does cover all the wall. Let it dry and it's done.

If it's really bad, then you should seal the wall with an oil based pigmented sealer, and get the wall skim coated. This will give you the best smooth paint finish.

First sand of the glue with a sander or just use sand paper. if there are any gouges or holes fill them with drywall compound. sand the compound once it dry's re compound and sand again once it drys. Prime your wall with primer paint first, then go with what ever colour suites your taste dear. have fun with you project.
