I have guaged my ears many times before and it seems that the bigger I go, the harder it is to do! Any suggestions??

Stretching gets harder the bigger you go.

Make sure you've let your ears heal from the last stretch, at least 8 weeks at that size, preferably longer. Make sure to take your jewelry out and massage your lobes every couple of days at least (it will encourage blood flow and help prevent thinning).

When it's time to stretch, make sure you have lots of lube on the taper and go slow. I'm sure you're familiar with the process so I won't go into detail.

If the taper won't go properly, wait another week or two before trying again. If it just won't happen, go see your piercer. You may just need a bit of help with the stretch.

When stretching before, have you had blowouts or tears? A build up of scar tissue can prevent future stretches.

You don't 'guage' a piercing...you stretch it. The gauge of a piercing is the thickness of the jewelry being worn. Sorry, that makes me nuts.

Anyway, there are a couple of ways to do it.

First, wear hoops or circular barbells in the pierce for a few weeks. the weight of the jewelry will cause the stretching to occur naturally.

OR...if your decent at wood work, you can get a dowel rod, cut it down to a 3 inch piece, and shape that. Make sure to treat it with bees wax for a few days to prevent scratching the inside of the channel. Wood and bone plugs work really well for larger piercings too (they don't react to body fluid at all, are light weight, and don't get the funk that acrylic and metal do at larger sizes).

OR...you can find stretching tapers fairly inexpensive online. Some of them are made so that you can wear the taper as jewelry (like a talon shaped piece). Keep in mind that these are meant to be temporary pieces.

Get a heavier plug and moisturize your ear a lot. The extra weight should pull the skin, stretching it some to make the next one easier. Good luck.

You will regret this when you are 45!
