The same problem is occurring in Australia, where I'm from. The contribution of forest burning is particulate matter and gases and most definitely is a proportion of the emmissions which are contributing to Global Warming. Not sure precisely how much, I'm sorry to say

The thing that we need to do is TELL the governments of the US and Australia (and everywhere else that logging is occurring -the south east asian countries of Indonesia and Malaysia are also BIG culprits here), rather than asking, that "enough is enough" especially in regards to Old Growth logging.

The corporate nasties that control most logging operations have continually trundled out pseudo - science to apologise for their practices. This pseudo-science takes the form of statements akin to "burning a forest post-harvesting is mimicking the natural occurrence of wildfires and is therefore needed to assist with regeneration of the forest." This is, quite simply, wrong.

There is NOTHING natural about post-harvesting burns as they're often done out of season, are in an area which is anything but natural, are usually 20 to 50 times hotter than a naturally occurring fire and are often allowed to escape into untouched forest adjacent to the harvested area deliberately so that that forest can be logged with the justification of "salvage logging"!!!!

We have the power to put a stop to this. We have the ability to make an appointment with our local politician and ask questions about such things. OUR representatives need to be told of the opposition to such harvesting of Old Growth and that their answers will shape the way we cast our votes at the next election.

Hope this helps!

Love and Light,

Jarrah

If loggers are not allowed to harvest timber on public land, then the least we should do is stop the burning of valuable timber. Either log or stop the burning, to do otherwise is to manifest complete stupidity with respect to managing this valuable public asset.

Yes because of deforestation and depletion of the ozone layer due to large levels of carbon monoxide, which can also cause respiratory poisoning and lung problems.

Burning of the forest also deprive the animals of the wild of their homes and then they tend to move more into the cities and towns in search of shelter ans food.

By the way, why do they burn all these forests???

i'm no expert, but i believe that in order to have a healthy forest we need to let the forests burn (in smaller, cooller patches like they used to) or log it in a way to simulate the role fire has played. i think it has been burning way to hot and big and been logged for profit rather than to sustain the forest. we need to change something

The forest are going to burn any way, so do we burn them under our control or fight them out of control. This is why so many houses are lost to wild fires in California. The amount of CO2 wouldn't change, just the loss of life and property.

I believe you will find that most forest fires are accidental. And the ones set on purpose are intended to reduce the probability of bigger and worse accidental fires later.
