I have an ingrown toenail that resulted in a cut in my big toe. It's been there about a month and won't heal because the part of the nail you can't remove is poking into it. As such, my entire toe is now swollen.

I noticed this morning that my foot and shin are of a significantly higher temperature than the noninfected side. There isn't much pain. I've put neosporin on the cut a few times, but it seems to do little. It doesn't seem to be getting worse very quickly, either.

So. I don't care much about being on the 'safe side'. I want to know at what point do I NEED to see a doctor? I have no insurance, so I'd like to avoid a pricey/violent visit. Should I just keep using peroxide and neosporin and hope for the best? I've been considering using a poultice of comfrey (knitbone), is this advisable for an open wound?

Thanks.

Honey you are pretty close to having blood poisoning because of the infection You need to go to the doctor so they can give you IV antibiotics and possibly remove the nail and lance the toe to drain the pus. If you wait very much longer you can cause damage to the bone and also if the infection gets into your blood stream it can infect your heart.

I have been seeing a Chiropractor for the same thing. It took a month or so & now I am better than I have ever been in years. Pain pills just block the pain....they do not eliminate the CAUSE of the pain. Eliminate the cause & the pain will be gone. You have something out of alignment in your spine that is causing the pain. Do you really think that these pills that your doctor gives you can physically move your spine back into proper alignment If you had a car that was out of alignment, would putting additives in the engine cure it? Think-about-it

the fact that your foot and leg are now warmer may imply the infection is spreading. see a doctor.
