You know, it's kind of funny but I am over 40 and have never used cuss words, They just weren't a part of my family's vocabulary. My grandfather used to say fiddlesticks when he was angry or frustrated but that's about all I can remember. Then about 10 years ago I was taking some classes at the local community college. The people in the class were very nice but they regularly used cuss words. Seemed as though every other word from their mouths was something crass. Then one day, when I was all alone, driving myself to school there was suddenly an accident ahead of me that I knew would make me late for class and it happened. It just came out. I quickly covered my mouth with my hand as if to push it back in, but it was too late. It shocked me. But I realized how much association can affect your behavior. Up till that moment I'd never cursed or even wanted to. I came from a family where even words like "golly, gosh and gee" were considered bad. From then on I would ask the people in class to please not use that sort of language in my presence. Constantly reminding them not to do it retrained my brain not to. This is what you may have to do. Retrain your brain. Get close friends and family to remind you each time you slip and you do the same with family and close friends. You will gradually ease those words out of your vocabulary.

LOL you get creative

I liked.. as you built up strength...
"mmmMMMMMOTHER MACREE!!"

Crud for crap

sheeeeeesh! for .. "oh sh*t!"

I LOVE "idiot face" when someone cuts me off.

A lot of the time I ask myself why I am so tense that I say such things in the first place. What is wrong? Why? It is usually a quick answer lol.

furkytoodle is a GREAT word

I make sure to avoid words of extreme like "hate" and replace them with more accurate descriptive words...detest, hold in disgust, spit on, etc.

And I rarely lose my cool. There is always a sensible way out of a problem.

Also, as much as you might be tempted to say something like "f#ck THAT action!" it just sounds crude. Much more fun to have a creative alternative. Even a simple "I have other things to do." is preferable.

As for words that denigrate the love act, I think of it just that way. How can something that celebrates life and continuity be cursed as evil? I remember that.

Anyhow, hope that helps.

I must sound like a big nerd to others but having a child really helped me get rid of my potty mouth. When I am mad I usually say "Darn it!" or if something is surprising or unexpected I say "Oh, my goodness." Don't get me wrong there are still times that a curse word slips out but so far never within earshot of my son and he is almost three. If all else fails I usually curse in another language usually Jamaican or Finnish.

Replacing curse words is simply a matter of expanding the vocabulary. I once met a little boy who liked to curse for the shock value of it. I told him that I wasn't impressed and that cursing was boring, anyone can do it, but it takes an intelligent person to think of a replacement for such words. For example, instead of calling someone an as*hole, say sphincter pit, poop chute, or anal canal. Instead of sh*t, malarkey or excrement. Use your imagination to come up with something else. It's a lot more clever.

Expand your vocabulary, remember strong language is a sign of a weak mind. Think about what your going to say before you blurt it out. It will take some time but let me tell you how proud I am of you for making the effort. I hate to see people cursing in casual conversation.

I tend to replce curse words with silly, made-up things.

F'ing. Flargenflugen. Good Gravy. Sweet Fancy Moses! Holy frajoles! Holy Toledo! Swell (one of my favorites. "Swell. That's just swell."). Or something like the Crocodile Hunter's "Crikes!" is always fun to blurt out at a time of stress, too!

You can always make up a word or a phrase to stand in for a curse word...and you will really only be the one to know what that certain word/phrase means.

*if you watch the simpsons, Ned Flanders does this all the time...he makes up words*

Two effective tactics are think up funny, innocuous phrases to substitute-holy guacamole, son of a sailor, purple monkeys, whatever you can call to mind at a time of stress.
Another one is to growl or make some other nonverbal sound instead. This can be a little easier to remember.

I just say crap. I don't consider that too bad of a cuss word. I never cuss except when I drive and that is really easy to do here in Atlanta traffic lol.
