the best dog breed I ever knew of was the one that my neighbor had. He would let me borrow the dog and play with it and I would have lots of fun, then return the dog and never have to pay for any dog food, grooming, or vets bills.

I defiantly wouldn't go with a small dog around children. They are unpredictable and can be very snippy. They are more likely to bite than a large dog would. Breeds like poodles, shitzous, and other toy dogs are high strong which translates into very little tolerance for small children, or any children for that matter.

Boxers are excellent family dogs. They are very loyal and love children. The only thing is they needs tons of exercise. So if you don't have a yard you need to be prepared to take it out for walks at least once a day if not more. And have a ball handy for fetch in the house too. It will keep you child's energy level at check too.

My suggestion would be to either look online at different breeds or take your child to a dog park - you'll see all types of dogs there! There are many great dog breeds out there, but you need to research and find one that suits your situation - i.e. a dog that doesn't need a lot of room to run since you're in an apt., a dog that is child friendly (not fragile like a Yorkie or other "toy" breed) and depending on you and your daughter's level of activity and energy you'll want either a high-moderate or lower energy dog...or a lap dog if that's your desire!
There are a ton of great "mixed breed" or "mutts" in our neighborhood and some of them are the sweetest, smartest, most lovable dogs (plus mixed breeds often have less health issues than pure breds), so I'd certainly suggest checking out your local SPCA or Animal Rescue - a great cause and it'll cost less than getting a pure-bred! (just steer clear of ANY pet store pups...most are from puppy mills and are usually WAY over-priced)
Best of luck in finding the right addition to your family!

A Corgi! They're a smaller breed (20-30 lbs), yet not small enough to get crushed buy a child. They can tolerate fingers and feet all over them, and because of the shorter legs you don't have to worry about them jumping all over the house and on your guests. They are energetic when need be or quiet as well. I'd say a good adaptive dog. I have a 7 year old and I know what your feeling.

Always consider the origins of the breed. Terriers were often ratters. They hunted,, chased tirelessly and dug for their prey. They would catch it shake it and tear it up. They are intelligent and get bored when not working - hence running around barking, digging at carpet or furniture, chewing, ripping tearing and nipping. Hounds are chasers by nature - they need to run and will chase everything. Herding dogs will chase and run also. Do some research. It all comes down to how much exercising are you willing to do. How much grooming are you willing to do. How much time are you prepared to put into socializing? It all depends on the breed and how you and your daughter establish boundaries. Watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel. If you can't then order the DVD. BEFORE YOU GET A DOG He really is a breath of fresh air. I wish you years of joy with your pet.

it depends on what you're looking for. What are your needs in the dog. Is your daughter trust worthy enough to know how to handle a smaller dog. Do you want a dog who sheds little to none. Yes? Get anything mixed with a yorkie, poodle or cocker spaniel.

Because you live in an apt. i would not suggest a beagle. They're more howler like than barkers. Either way it will be annoying for your neighbors

Want a bigger dog that is child friendly? I suggest a lab or golden retriever

I swear by mixed breeds. Something smallish for your apartment, but not too small that cannot handle the roughness of a nine year old. I have a beagle/lab/cocker mixed and he is wonderful. He is a little bigger than a beagle but smaller than a lab. Mixed breed dogs have great attitudes and can be easy going dogs because you can get several different personalities in one dog. Hope this helps you and good luck with your search. Here is a great shelter site with lots of good dogs that need homes... petfinder.com

a miniature or toy Poodle. They are caring, intelligent (some of them can be found in circus or for hunting. Though they are really great to keep you company). I have one brown. They are sometimes really exited but are really playful and easy to train and to be taken cared. If you dont like dogs that falls a lot of hair, a poodle will b great. Mine doesn't have any hairs that are found and my mom is alergic to animals who have hair or any dust so anyway. Whatever the dog breed you are going to choose, every dog has different personalities like us.(like mine whos really clumsy and that hits the wall everytime he gets too exited to play with its ball and he isnt even blind lmao, werent they suposed to be extremly smart dogs?XD ). By the way:

- Male dogs can be noisy or calm, itll depend. But they usually like to spend the time to mark their territories.
- Female dogs are usually always exited and active.

I'll sugest you start with a miniature dog first. More secure. Cuz as you know or might have heard.. When dogs get aggressive for some reason and that its only a child with a big dog and no parents around... Imagine how dangerous it can be. Not to scare you, but like... in any case. Usually dog wont do this.

Every one here is going to tell the breed of dog they have is the best dog for kids, well a lot of them are wrong. You need to research the many different breeds and make an educated decision on what you think is the best breed for you and your families lifesyle. AKC has a web site with descriptions of all recognized breeds of dog.(akc.org )You could also read a few books like Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, or Idiots Guide to Chosing, Buying and Raising a Dog.

If properly trained and embraced as a beloved member of the family, any breed can make a great pet. With that said, some dogs are seen as more “kid-friendly” than others and, as a result, have become extremely popular among families. According to the AKC, the five most popular breeds in the United States are:

Labrador Retrievers are by far America’s most popular dog—more than 140,000 Lab puppies were registered last year with the AKC—and have a reputation for being playful, hardworking and affectionate toward children. The Lab is easily trained and is highly respected for his prowess at many jobs: as a guide dog for the disabled, a search-and-rescue dog, and for narcotics detection.

Golden Retrievers are sporty, easy to train and strong, but their most outstanding trait is character. They are outgoing and devoted companions to people of all ages, happy and trusting. They make great hunting companions, too.

German Shepherd are noble in appearence and character. This breed's courage, steadfast heart, and keen senses have endeared him to families for generations. Active and outdoorsy, German Shepherds are very fond of children and make wonderful companions.

Beagles love being around people and other animals. They are gentle, happy companions who thrive on affection and attention. They are also clever, quick, and, most of all curious. They need plenty of active exercise.

Dachshund has a lively, upbeat personality—spunky, curious and friendly. Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshund’s love to dig, romp and run. They are affectionate, especially with children, and enjoy going for walks and other forms of exercise

You should do your research before you bring any animal into your home. If breed is not an issue you could always adopt a pup from your local pound or shelter. They come spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations and you can find all ages, sizes and breeds. As I stated in the beginning any dog can be good with children it is a matter of how the are trained and socialized. Also please keep in mind that small children and babies should never ever be left alone with dogs.

I LOVE Labs and English Springers, but both types of dogs NEED room to run, a yard to exercize and a place to walk daily. They are big/medium sized dogs and it would be unfair for them to be couped up in any apartment.

Pugs and Boston Terriers are perfect for apartment living, they don't require much exercise, don't usually like extended periods outside and are USUALLY great with children.
