hello friend:

I grew up in nyc and Harlem has recently seen a renaissance. It is now full of peaceful, successful black people (and Bill Clinton.) I recently read that a brownstone will cost you well over $2,000,000 - which makes it the most expensive place per square foot to live in the world.

It it totally safe to tour Harlem during the day, especially around the Columbia University area. At night-time, however, people from out of town come in for the nightlife, and I would not go at all.

If you really want to see it, I would recommend a double-decker bus tour that goes through town. They will drop you in a safe area, you can stroll around for a little while, then get back on the bus.

good luck

My friend lives in Harlem and I've been there in the evenings and on weekends (and I'm a pale female). Harlem has had a renaissance as Joe mentions and I wouldn't be worried to be in the well-known clubs in the evening. I probably wouldn't stray off into a real dive club by myself, at least not until I spent a bit more time in the neighborhood. Don't go if you don't have street smarts.

If you look like you're scared or feeling out of place, people can pick up on it. Likewise, if you look comfortable, people probably will let you enjoy yourself. I've lived in many places where I stick out (including internationally), and that's the key. In Harlem, a lot of the people actually have greeted me and say hello, which I don't get in other parts of NYC.

Yes but If I were you I'd Stay on main well crowded streets and walk as close to the curb as you can when near alleys. With Harlems crime rep and all you should play it as safe as you can.

It is as safe for a white person to tour Harlem as it is for a black person to tour rural Alabama. Now, how safe is either of them in your mind?

I am a small white girl. If I can walk to the store in the middle of the night in the projects in Cleveland, you can tour Harlem.

The world is a mirror...if you are looking all crazy and scared you make yourself a target.

There is nothing to be afraid of, it is all hype. Dont start anything and there wont be anything.

I wouldn't suggest it if you present an attitude of predjudice as profoundly as you have here, but then again, it wouldn't be just harlem, but anywhere outside your home

If you stay along 125th Street and have your "street smarts" on you, it is better than it was 20 years ago.
