literally, Konnichiwa could be translated as "Good Day" (sort of like "buenos dias" in Spanish and hence, can only be used during the "day." It wouldn't be inappropriate to use it in the morning or evening. For those you would use "ohayo gozaimasu" and "konbanwa" respectively. Since konnichiwa is the most common greeting, it is often thought of as "hello" but actually Japanese doesn't have a word for hello. To use the term "konnichiwa" more than once a day to a person would seem silly, but that rule doesn't apply to "hello" in English.

you can only use it during the larger part of the day.. not in the morning or the evening....
