You just know. The biggest thing to look for is them choosing you out of a crowd to make faces to, touch, or otherwise.
BUt, like another person said, if you do not know it already, it probably is not happening; it becomes too obvious not to recognize it. On the other hand, I think that what is really going on with you is that you don't want to believe it is really happening!

Well, if they are making eye contact with you when they ask you questions, they may be flirting. If they act genuinely interested in your answers, they may be flirting. If they brush their hand or foot or elbow against you sort of on purpose they may be checking to see what you will do, and flirting. I am not sure what scenario you or in but those are a few clues.

If you just met or just saw them from across the room they will kinda stare at you and smile or just keep looking at you as if there is something on your face...lol......if you already know them a little they will smile and tease you, maybe try to poke you or grab your arm or something, they may fidget or appear a little giddy or nervous a bit and make a lot of eye contact.
If they dont look at you or try to talk to and all the above, then you know they are not flirting....

Notice their body language. If you two are sitting on a couch or whatnot, and they begin to stroke your feet with theirs, or they're lightly touching your arm every now and then, or they're smiling coyly more frequently, then they are probably flirting. Also, when they look into your eyes a lot and smile sheepishly, that's a tell-tale sign!

that's the thing you never really know for sure...just ask in the middle of it turn look at them and say "are you flirting with me?"
