Studying in a group forces you to concentrate on information that you are studying. You are less likely to be think anything else than what you are currently studying.
Since in a study group, each has different perspective of looking at the information, each could contribute to better understanding of the matter studied. Eg if you are studying Geography of Venezuela, and only one from your study group have visited the country sometime back, then he/she could fill you with out of text information that is related to intext information.
Each has thought of different ways of memorising things and can contribute to the group. Eg some must have thought of short-hand or symbolic clues to information, while some may have referred to some book helpin with the memorisation. Some may go by method what their teacher/parents/friends etc asked them to folloow and so on.
Since in group you can even share some jokes or chat with person, its hardly a monotonous task and has variety of interesting elements as compared to studying alone.
As is rightly said, "A discussion with a wise man across the table is worth a month's study!"

This ? sounds like you're in school and have to write an essay or something of that nature. I have no clue, but maybe because you're having fun with other people while studying instead of sitting in a chair with a book in your face.

Bull$hit. There's always a study for everything but no proof what so ever!
