Though the United States is accepting of people from all cultures, the vast majority of Americans speak English as a first language. It is the language of business, education, and politics. For a person to really succeed here, I feel that person needs to be able to speak conversational English at the very least.

Should American taxes pay for that instruction? Yes, but only if illegal immigration stops- this way the damage that they do to our economy can be repaired enough for us to have a proper immigration program and the kind of money needed to educate them. I think that if all immigrants learned English, it would directly stand to benefit taxpayers and their economy.

Why?
Most Americans cannot speak and write English.
Within 25 years the majority of US popualtion will of lived here less than 25 years, with a bastardized form of English that even some white people will still be able to understand and guess what there is nothing anyone can do about it except learn it and survive.
If you make enough money maybe you can go live in a key locked gated community where everyone will be just like you and speak old but not that old English.
Most americans do not read literture, over 1/6th of the whites are at 6th grade level and some additional 30% read below grade twelve level and they graduated from school.
Why worry about reading or speaking English all you have to know is put your x on the bottom line and they will give you a job either in the militry or at MC Donalds or Wal Mart.
If you can speak English well enough and have a litle brain power left over you can learn a second language and go there to find a decent paying job or work here in states interpreting from the foreign owners language into English for the dummies who work for them.
Gettign a job for a college student will have to be in government or at a competing foreign wage scale and even our government as it privitizes more and more of its clucks and ends many environmental programs, study of stars and jobs for college kids in the summers no longer economical to keep in force and will not need those degrees.

The Ethiopians speak English.
Somali seem to have good handle on English.
The Korean Grocers speak English(at least enough to do business but not for small talk....Koreans aren't much for small talk).
Vietnamese pick up English.
Chinese pick up English.
Polish, Germans, Hungarians, Italians....
Almost everybody tries to learn English.

Last Summer I worked with a guy from Darfur......
rough looking dude.
Black as black can be ...tall...gnarly looking scars on face.
And he spoke ENGLISH.

These people(Africans) study it when they are in camps in a desert living in miserable conditions waiting for chance to come to the U.S.

While those SNEAKING across out southern border practically refuse to learn ENGLISH.

So what would be the point of ENGLISH INSTRUCTION?
Everybody else seems to be doing on their own.
EXCEPT THE LATINOS it seems.

They love everything about their country except living there. .
