In the Bible, Revelation 13:18 mentions "six hundred threescore and six." A "score" is 20. 600+(3X20)+6=666. It refers to the mark of the antichrist, the human who will one day rule the world for seven years. He will be possessed by Satan, because he will be completely against God. "Called a "Man" meaning possibly, a set of men; or an Institution of men. It seems to a Name, the letters of which, when regarded as numerals, total 666.

Irenaeus, a Pupil of Polycarp, who was a pupil of John, understood the 666 to be the Greek word "Lateinos"; L,30; A,1; T;300 E,5; I,10; N,50; O,70; S,200; These total 666.

"Lateinos" means "Latin Kingdom." Papal Rome made Latin its Official language. And it still is. Romes Canons, missals, prayers, decrees, bulls, blessings, cursings, are in Latin."

Revelation 13:18 says "Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666." The Bible is the first book that mentions the triple 6. The 666 is a symbol for the Anti-christ.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

I dont know but its not from the bible. The bible states that the number 666 represents the number of a man. I think somewhere along the line culture decided to let it represent satan.

No, many people..even scholars link it to Nero..but that is just a speculation. : )

Six is man's number, no worries there. In Revelations 7 and 10 are God's numbers.

It is from Revelations, and no, it does not refer to Nero, who could hardly have fulfilled the role of the Anti-Christ. I would suggest that you read Revelations at some point, but maybe start from Matthew and work your way through...

No one really "started" it. In the Bible numbers have meanings and back in Jesus's times '7' was the number for completetion and '6' isn't complete but its so close. It pretty much represents that no matter how close the devil gets to God he will never be complete like God is. For example take the letter 'C' it almost makes a full circle but doesn't. .take the letter 'O' its complete and whole like God (He has no beginning and no end).
