If you're using a recipe with a lot of moist ingredients, the steam build up is apt to be the culprit. You don't want to vent the steam too often, or else the food may dry out.

Turning down the heat and briefly lifting the lid just long enough to let out a little steam will probably be the best bet.

If its rattling because its about to boil over then put it more to one side so the steam can come out if its rattling because it just doesnt fit right anymore put a kinda heavy towel on it or a wet regular towel

Use a crock pot liner. Reynolds makes them. You can find them next to the aluminum foil at the grocery store.
