Here is the thing - I have almost finished the portrait of a woman and the face is painted in a realistic manner in oils. I am stuck now because I can't make myself to finish it. Everyone tells me who talented I am, while I am scared I will ruin it if I touch it again. What's wrong with me?

Leave it... Start another canvas with the same subject.. Use the one prior as a test or practice canvas and call it complete.. Many painters did /do this...

Your confidence may come back and you just might work on it again one day.. Then again, you may not.. So what in any circumstance...

I know what you mean. This happened to me with my first portrait painting, after finishing the face i got stuck trying to figure out what to do with the background to tie it all in. At that point i knew i didn't want to use the same one in the photo but was also afraid i might mess it up. So i studied other artist's portraits and this helped me figure out how to go about it from there. I also learned a valuable lesson. Planning and making notes before starting any painting certainly helps. If you wish to see my art go to hellosanantonio.com and look for artist name ''Guerro''.

you are thinking too much which is causing a block. Just let it all out. I suggest starting on a new project or canvas and just kind of get that doubt out of your system by painting something else completey...I guarantee next thing you know you will be finishing the other piece. It could also be what the other person said..You are finished with the piece. You could just add a background. My teachers always hated white space.

im guessing you stopped and when you stopped you couldnt start again?
i know the feeling if you don't want to finish don't.
you can either leave it the way it is or realize you can finish the woman and complete the portrait taking it one stroke at a time.
but remember art is never finished only abandoned.

dont force urself...art is not something that come through force...leave the painting alone for some time...you might not be ready to work on it yet...just move around and look through other paintings...u might get inspired to work on the painting back or maybe you would get the interest to work on a different painting...whichever way, both benefits u...

You're having problems with perfection. A dilemma which you ask yourself what would be the best for that painting.

Well I suggest you better take a stroll.
