If the car has a posi (both wheels spin in the same direction when spinning the driveshaft) the jack up both - if one wheel spins backwards when spinning the driveshaft set one down to check the other.

Then mark the tire and driveshaft and spin the tire. Count how many times the driveshaft spins for 1 revolution of the tire. It may be a partial number (3.5) - this is your approximate axle ratio. Take this number and compare to what the factory offered to get the actual.

If you can - pull the third member out (ford 9 inch rear end doesn't have a cover) and count the teeth on the ring and pinion. Divide the large number by the small - This will give you the actual ratio.

I had one of these, and the best I could find on line is that it was a 3:00-1 rear end. The car has a 289 engine in it. Not sure if the 6 cylinder models had the same gearing though.

There should be a code either on the differential itself or somewhere else on the car- maybe in the VIN.

Here's a list of the axle ratio codes for '67:
(*number indicates conventional axle/letter denotes limited-slip unit)

0 = 2.79:1
1/A = 3.00:1
2 = 2.83:1
3/C = 3.20:1
4/D = 3.25:1
5/E = 3.50:1
8/H = 3.89:1
I = 4.11:1

Count the number of teeth on the ring gear and the number of teeth on the pinion. Divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion and that will give you the ratio. For example, if your ring gear has 30 teeth and your pinion has 10 teeth, you would have a 3.00 ratio. For simplicity, I picked an easy one.

If the rear end has not been opened before, there is a tag under one of the driver's side bolt that has the ratio stamped on it.

There is no cover to pull, you have to pull the hoghead to count teeth. It either has an 8" or a 9" rearend.

i don't know about equation, but you can jack up the car, and rotate the driveshaft...count the exact amount of rotations of the tires for every turn of the driveshaft.
