David Hume advises us, when considering reports of 'miracles', to consider two possible options:
- a law of nature was spontaneously violated, or
- a person (or persons) are mistaken, deceiving, or deceived.
Hume thinks we should judge which of these is the least probable, and discard that option. On this basis, "miracles" mean that people are mistaken and sometimes mendacious.
