In California waters, probably the Tady 45 or something similar. I believe the 45 is a knock-off of a Starman Candybar (long out of business) and since then a number of other manufacturers have made their own versions. Basically they're six-inch long aluminum lures.

my advice being in a dangerous situation with them is use a mid size casting spoon or trolling spoon and get as many in the water as possible
my bad expeirience was free diving bridges in florida and i was coming up in the middle of a barracuda school. i just happened to be wearing a super shiny watch and necklace. i wasnt to injured but it still hurt and was scary as heck
