It is corporate greed at its best. But, to be fair, the race teams knew this stuff. It is in the rules. The companies who pay a ton of money for the rights to be "the official" whatever "of NASCAR" deserve to be exactly that. But, bottom line is that the France family is just trying to get more money (by selling these rights to companies like NEXTEL, Sonoco, Tylenol, etc...)

well, my opinion and my opinion only; this really brings out more publicity, but most folks me thinks are going to lean one way or the other. someones got to lose.
i don't think NASCAR is going to make a monetary settlement.
The Shell and Sunoco deal is a bit too ridiculous, this Nextel and Cingular/AT&T deal was wriiten with a clause into Nextel deal with coming on board with their sponsorship. Personally I do not like Nextel. But that is my issue.
Rumor has it that Verizon is to buy Alltel, so wait for that dilemma.
Actuallly it has not a dang thing to do with drivers.
It isn't NASCAR pulling crap, it is the sponsors' war on advertisement.
NASCAR is the boss, governor, and dictator, and judge and jury. And there are the rules they make as they go along. Another rule will be made here by July.
I predict the only outcome of the sponsors' dilemma won't be known till 1/2 way in the season.
No one loses rides... Ryan Newman drives the #12 Verizon car, Jeff Burton drives the #31 AT&T car and Kevin Harvick drives the #29 small logo Shell car. All this at a cost for sponsorship.
AT&T will probably have to pay NEXTEL something and Verizon will have to pay NEXTEL something, Shell only has to wear small logos.

I hate nextel!!!
Ever since they took over the series name they have f@#k the sport to death. Honestly who gives a crap that AT&T puts a logo on the 31 car. Does it really take away from nextel who buy the way has just been merged with sprint so they will change the name of the series again next year. Its ok for them but not anyone else? WTF nascar!!! In are part of the country we dont even have nextel service. If I was AT&T I would say seeya and just pull the sponsorship altogether and put all my money into commercials during races and hire fans to hold AT&T sings up behind the speed channel stage. Nascar has started something they wont be able to control so lossing sponsorships will kill many teams in the end. Funny how they bring in the car of tommorow which is one of the dumbest things they could have done EVER and say they want more competition. Why noy have some between sponsors. At least millerlite and budwieser enjoy the compition and have fun with it. The phone companies are ran by spoiled *** brats that have no clue what nascar is all about. I love the series but PISS ON NEXTEL and SONOCO. I would not buy any of them just for this reason.

i recently heard that next year it will be the sprint cup instead of the nextel cup so with all of this changing because sprint and nextel merged i dont see where they can say that burton cant drive the at&t car since the business situations are similar nascar is getting too strict about the wrong things i think i think i liked it better when it was the winston cup and anything went the way i see it if these companies spend all this money for their names to be on a car they should be allowed to put it there otherwise it would seem nextel and sunoco have a sort of monopoly in nascar that isnt fair
but the publicity these companies are getting right now is probably more monetarily rewarding than a logo would be any way
GO SMOKE!!!

I agree with you that nascar is pulling crap. Race teams depend on sponsors to help fund their racing. If they can't have certain sponsors they lose out on money. Don't we have freedom of choice anymore? I mean there are more than 1 cell phone and gas companies.

The deal only applies to the Nextel Cup, the drivers can put the logo on their Busch car.

I think it's junk. They're only hurting the sport. Fans typically support the sponsors of their favorite drivers. If companies aren't allowed to act as sponsors, they lose money and NASCAR loses fan base (to an extent).
