You could make a couple of the steps superfluous:
1) Snow --> show
2) Show --> shot
3) Shot --> snot
4) Snot --> soot
5) Soot --> moot
6) Moot --> molt
7) Molt --> melt
Technically, the fourth step is completely unnecessary... Does that still count?
