I want to know people are so mean.?

people like to use the word retarted a lot. does that make them feel better about themselves? or just don't care if they hurt other peoples feelings?

It is not polite to use the word "retarded" because it has a negative definition of insulting disabled people. I still get offended when I hear it from strangers. They don't care and they don't realize that they are being rude. I think it has to do with the person's upbringing because they were never told it was wrong to say that. There are a lot of rude and mean people in this world. I deal with them everyday. Best advice is to just know that deep down inside you are a better person because you do care about other people's feelings.

well i personally think that retarted is a way 2 express themselves and also it is a joking way too... but for most people that say that they dont want 2 hurt the persons feelings or make themselves feel better about themselves...

people are mean a lot of times because they themselves are hurting over something or afraid or have low self esteem and so they take it out on others. some of them have been taught by others (parents, peers, stressful environments endured over a long period of time, or a trauma) that the best defense and the best way to have power over others is 'get them first'...however, some people are just agressive from an early age...maybe brain chemistry causes it. Stand up to them but at the same time try and understand them so you don't carry a resentment....also, counter any act of meaness with an act of kindness to someone, be part of the solution, not the problem

There is no solid answer for every person that behaves like this, I'd say that most are doing it to make other people feel smaller, weaker, thus making themselves feel better or bigger, so to speak. Usually, they don't care much if they hurt other people's feelings, or they wouldn't act that way.

it is a really mean word...i use it sometimes when im not thinking just because when i was younger it was the word to use... i dont believe people are trying to be rude or make themselves feel better its just they dont think about where they are saying. also alot of them have never been around a mentally retarded person so they do not know the extent of the word they use.

If it is any consolation: most often those that fling those hurtful arrows are themselves the ultimate target. But, I pray for them and try to love them even, still. Also, humankind as a whole society is just like us individuals in learning what not to do. We all will mature one day.

Unless they've had someone in their family that suffers from retardation they probably use it as a slang. Not knowing or caring what the real meaning of it is. My daughter's half sister is mentally challenged and she cringes at the word when she hears it. I do not think that people abuse it intentionally.

Yep. It does make them feel better about themselves. I have a brother-n-law who belittles his wife and kids. And it's so sad. He's got absolutely nothing going on for himself and I feel like he needs to point out others shortcomings so no one notices his own. It's insecurity. That's all it is. He's very angry and insecure and doesn't care who he hurts.

Some people don't care, others do think they are better, others are simply illiterate about the subject. It was what they were taught and may not realize they are hurting anyone's feelings.
