it really isn't their problem. a lot of people say that it is oppression, but a lot of muslim women who wear it say they don't mind it or even like it! no, women are not below men in Islam, if anything, their status is higher because they should be protected.

by veil i mean the one on her head, not on her face, cuz muslim women don't have to cover their faces, i don't know why some do it.

welltravelledprog, Islam doesn't teach that. i do agree that in some CULTURES, they are taught that, but in Islam, it isn't taught that it is her fault and men are supposed to respect them. some don't, obviously, but that's their problem.

It does not bother me if she chooses that. It does not bother me if Hindu women put a pretty red dot on their forehead. It does not bother me when anybody wears what they choose. Peace be with you

Muslim women should be free to practice there culture. I think it became an issue when I muslim woman in America wasnted to take her drivers liscense picture with her veil completely covering her face. Defeating the purpose of even taking the picture in the first place, and who is to say who it was under the veil. Other than that..to each her own..you know!

Personally, I'd wear one if it was an option. I've always thought that a veil -- be it on a Muslim woman, a Catholic nun, or a Jewish woman in a tallit -- is a very beautiful and feminine garment.

The only time I think that a woman should be requested to remove the veil is for an identification photo. Lives may depend on a police officer's ability to recognize someone in an ID picture, and I feel that we should all be photographed without something that would make that indentification difficult.

That's IMHO, of course.

Because people don't like what they don't understand. And they feel uncomfortable with things that are different. I have a few friends that are Muslim. Some of them are covered and some of them aren't. Either way, it's their choice to do so. I've been told that they do it because it forces men to respect them for their minds not how they look. It puts them on an equal playing field. Do people have a problem with nuns that wear their habit?

I think the problem is that you can't tell who is under a veil.

Increasingly, in a world where people are more and more suspicious of each other, and security is becoming ever more important; the ability for someone to commit crime or terrorism - and hiding behind a veil for example to get away with it, is unacceptable.

I don't think people care that it's a religious expression too, people don't mind temples etc.

Let's see...raise a woman her entire life in a culture that tells her she MUST wear a veil because she's evil, too sexual, and a temptation to men...and if a man sees any of her bare flesh and gets sexually excited to the point of raping her, it's HER fault. Keep her in that environment all her life.

Then, one day ask her: Do you want to wear a veil or not? What do you think her answer will be? Of course, she'll say "Yes, I want to wear the veil" -- because all her life she's been told by everyone around her that to not wear one is evil and makes her a temptation to men, and if they rape her it's HER fault not theirs.

Give me a break -- this isn't some minor cultural oddity that we should respect. It's absolutely and completely oppression of women, treating them as evil, worse than second-class, and worthless except to make children. That a woman defends this shows how well the upbringing and brainwashing works.
Women don't need "protecting" except from men who treat them as dirt -- teach the men to respect, honor, and treat women as equals, and put them in a culture that values them, and they no longer need "protection."

Peace.

if it's the kind that only covers the head, i have no problem at all. when they wear the kind that hides everything but their eyes i do. unfortunately, in our world today, there are many things to be concerned about. it isn't the fact that they may be muslim, it's the fact that no one knows what they look like. thats not to say that i'm pranoid and i look for bad guys at every turn, but lets be realistic.if this were a person caring for your child, wouldn't you want to know what they looked like?

I don't care who wears what for religious or cultural reasons. The people who do find it a problem are usually the ones who are wearing crosses around their necks or who are closet racists. Sometimes they're both, which is a little disturbing. I always thought christianity was inherently opposed to racism of any form, but the KKK and Christian Identity movements have kinda killed that happy little 'let's all hold hands and sing' idea for me.

So if a lot of women say they don't find wearing veil, the law that requires all women to wear a veil is a good thing? What about the ONE Muslim who doesn't want to wear one? What about her rights? And where is the veil on your avatar?

I don't think I have a problem with a veil but I am concerned that men are allowed to remarry four times.
