I am trying to put together a research report in MS Word. I want to number the pages starting with the first page, not the title page. If I uncheck Start with numbers on first page, it doesn't number the title page (which is what I want) but puts a 2 on what should be page 1. How do I fix this? i know it is probably simple, but I just rarely use MS Word for anything.

At the bottom of your Title page, do Insert>Break and select Next Page. (This may put an extra blank page in. You should be able to remove the extra page by pressing the Del key (not the backspace key).

On the first page of your "new" section, Insert>Page Number. In the lower left corner click on the Format icon. Under Page Number, indicate for it to Start At - 1.

If you don't want the #1 to appear on either your title page or the first page of your document, you can simply uncheck Show Number on First Page in the main Page Numbering dialog box and close.

If you want the #1 to appear on the first page of your document, but not on your title page, you will want to go back up to your title page.
File>Page Setup, Layout Tab. Select Different First Page and be sure to select Apply to this Section.

If you do this a lot, you can set up a simple template.

Create a couple of pages with notes such as {Title Page} and {Begin Body Text} and then File>Save As>Template and then give it a name such as Research Report Format.

Also, by using the Insert>Break>Section>Next Page, and then Insert>Page Numbers>Format, you can change the number format so you can have little roman numerals for bibliography pages, etc.

this is also my dilemma when i'm writing my investigative papers adn term papers... i never found a truly technical way to do it but what i'd do is simply copy the content of the title page onto a another document, leaving the first page free... format your text upward so that the apge that used to be the title page would now be page one of your content... insert the page numbers as usual so that msword would put 1 on page one of your content...

then it's simply a matter of printing the body afterwhich printing the seperate document that now holds the title page...

its not a technical solution but i hope that helps...
