Although your license says you are an organ donor, organs will not be harvested without final permission from your next of kin. Your license specifies your wishes...it does not make you an organ donor.

You can change it if you wish...you will have to go to DMV, get a new license and tell them you want the organ donor taken off.

However, I strongly suggest you reconsider. Are you planning on dying tomorrow? You may change your mind again. There is a serious deficit of organs for donation world wide. One person can save the lives of many. I'm listed as a donor on my license. If I'm dead, I certainly don't need them anymore. Why do you want to change your mind?

Please reconsider. You would be doing a valiant service to others who may be dying and giving them a chance to live.

As I mentioned, final permission must come from the next of kin. What you really need is a living will that specifies to what extent you want medical care should you become incapacitated. Organ donation would not even be approached unless you were brain dead. You need to make your next of kin aware of your wishes. Get a living will.

It's not a death watch. It's simply being prepared. We will all die...but through the death of some of us, others may live. Think about it.

In most states, if you tell your family that you DO NOT want to be a donor, then the institution will have to comply. When you renew your liscense, you can choose not to be a donor. If you have an advance directive or other such legal documents, then you can state there that you don't want to be a donor, and that will also supercede you drivers liscense.

You will need to go down and re-apply for your license and yes, re-pay for them and then check no. Tell the clerk at the DMV what you want to do and they will assist you. Next time think before you act, and this will cost you the price of your license.
