Hey Mary, some people I think actually may find it useful to take this, I just want to say I don't think that it is as useful for everyone as it is prescribed. I think that America has become over medicalized. Some of these medications if misused can cause the affects that they are suppose to fix or if a person is not able to take them it can actually make it worse. I think that we ought to be more mindful about what we put into our bodies and make sure that it is the right thing and that it is actually what we need and working for what we need it to work for instead of just taking it. Everything has a purpose if it is used exactly right and most things can often be sometimes useful. I think that we as a country overdo it on a lot of things though. Medications are just one of them.

Advair is an inhaler that contains two combination medications: Fluticason and Salmeterol. Fluticasone is a steroid. It prevents inflammation. Salmeterol is a bronchodilator. It works by relaxing muscles in the airways to improve breathing. Advair is used to prevent asthma attacks, but does not relieve one already in progress. It's also used to treat COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), which includes chronic bronchitis.
Side effects can include:

I have taken advair, for 3 years now, at first I didn't like the feel of the powder in my throat, I felt I was going to choke, But once you get used to it its fine you don't even feel it anymore. I love this medication, I feel it has helped me greatly. I happen to be one of those who gets thrush, from this medication but it does not happen to everyone who takes it. The most important thing you have to do is after taking it, Gargle with a mouth wash, brush your tongue, as some of the powder remains in your mouth. (Thrush...collects in back of your throat, you can see white curd like particles) When I do get this I then have to take Mycelex. but I won't give up this medication, because I feel it has really helped me.

By "what does it do?", I presume you mean what is Advair used for? To prevent the bronchospasm of asthma. Advair is a combination product and is salmeterol xinafoate and fluticasone propionate. It comes in different strengths - salmeterol 50mcg with fluticasone 100mcg, 50mcg/250mcg respectively and 50mcg/500mcg respectively. Salmeterol by itself (Serevent) is used as a long-term maintenance med for asthma, to prevent exercise-induced asthma and for COPD or emphysema. Fluticasone by itself (Flonase) is used to manage seasonal and perennial allergic and nonallergic rhinitis.
Adverse effects for salmeterol:
Common - nasopharyngitis and URI
Less common - headache, sinus headache, tremor, nervousenss, giddiness, dizziness, tachycardia, palpations, pharyngitis, nasal or sinus disorder, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, joint and back pain, muscle pain, cough, LRI, hypersensitivity reactions
Life-threatening - ventricular arrhythmias and bronchospasm
Adverse effects of fluticasone:
No common adverse effects
Less common - headache, epistaxis, nasal burning, blood in mucus, pharyngitis and nasal irritation
No life-threatening adverse effects
