In addition to what others have said, check the bore to make sure it has not been damaged by poor cleaning techniques and that it is not rusted. Bring a bore light the next time you look at it.

Also, one very important thing to check is the crown. The owner of it probably cleans from the muzzle since its a lever action so theres a good chance that the crown will be damaged from the cleaning rod. If it is it won't shoot worth a darn but you can take it to a gunsmith to be recrowned which should take about a half hour. You can also get the right crowning tools and do it yourself.

I once bought a Winchester Model 94 .30-30 (in 2003) for about $275 and it was 99%. I liked it because it was the original .30-30. What I did not like was the knock on my shoulder from the rather small, hard butt.
It was a passing fancy. Sounds like a good deal to me if you want a Winchester, considering the fact that they are no longer made.

Have you fired it?
There is much that can go wrong and not be immediately apparent.
Ask to shoot it. If it chambers five rounds in succession without problems, and fires two on the first trigger pull, and seems to have no major corrosion, then $250 is pretty fair (although Winchester has similar lever-actions for less than $350 new).
Cheers.

Sounds good. Make sure it will feed ammo from the tubular magazine. Buy some snap caps for the .30-30 Winchester and see if it will feed them from the magazine after loading three or four. Remember, the action must be worked briskly in these lever actions. And also remember, Winchester closed its doors so there may not be any more new ones.

Best.

Winchester rifles are defiantly good solid rifles. You may want to look down the barrel and check to see what kinda shape the rifleing is in. This can give you a good indication of how much the rifle has been shot. If it looks good than yes I would say that is a good deal and I would jump on it.

i have one at home and its a very good rifle. i paid the same price (250) and it has never let me down. one good thing about it is that winchester stopped making that rifle so the value is only going to go up. if i walked into a gun shop and saw one for sale id buy it up.
