when anybody can do that... all they're doing is speaking jiberish... what's the purpose of doing it if anybody can do it? they just look dumb...

It is just one of the symptoms of the illness another is being unable to think and they dont look dumb they are.

Not all Christians speak in tongues, just extreme groups like Pentecostal and things. Those who don't cut their hair, wear make-up or let the women wear paints. When they speak in tongues it is usually a bad thing. Jim Jones (the leader of the cult where they drank the Kool-aid) often spoke in tongues to gain followers. Those who would also speak in tongues would usually just be so riled up they joined in! Most of those people are really dramatic. The amazing thing is when some peasant girl does it in a small town in Brazil and a priest investigates and it turns out she is speaking Ancient Greek!

There are different varieties of tongues. When it just sounds like jibberish that is "tongues for edification" and is best used in a personal prayer life. The Holy Spirit sometimes enables believers to speak in human languages unknown to them ... to speak to a buddhist, muslim or christian in their language with God's specific word to them (usually to lead them to belief in Christ, sometimes to help them with a difficult problem). Its rare though at the moment.

I know at least two people who've spoken in tongues, and it's turned out to be a real language, that they had never heard. So no, it's not fake.
But aside from that - it's not a special power or ability that you show off. It's a form of prayer, called praying in the spirit. Part of the reason for it is so that you can pray when you don't know what to pray for, or your mind is racing/tired/emotional and it's hard to focus.

if they would set down and read the bible they would not do that.....tongues in the bible, was like a jew speaking spanish, so they could teach the pople !!! not mumbo dumbbo jiberish,and rolling around on the floor like a fool......

Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift. I don't have that gift, but there are some people that do.
