I'm trying to get from Brooklyn/Manhattan, NYC to 34 River Road in Smithtown, NY 11787 completely by public transportation

Well, the Long Island Railroad does go to Smithtown, however, to get to your specific address may require taking a bus. Use www.trips123.com, type in the starting and ending address, date and time you are leaving, and it will show your route via Public Transportation

I have "done the work for you" and searched using NYC Penn Station as a starting point:

Penn Station New York, 7th Ave & 32nd Street
Take Port Jefferson Branch Train to Huntington

Get off at Huntington, Transfer to another train to Kings Park Station

Get off walk to Indian Head Rd & Kings Park Rd

Take #S56 Bus to
St Johnland Rd & Bishops Rd
