mr d,
do you mean to say traffic goes toward the east on even streets and west on odd numbered streets?

Face the direction with the higher number - that's north; east is to your right and west is to your left. Many New Yorkers have to walk to the corner to check the street number, too. When you get off at the same stop several times, your memory will kick in.

Try memorizing which avenue runs in which direction. That's not as hard as it sounds.
Traffic on even numbers goes north & odd numbers goes south. If Broadway is a one way street traffic is going south.
Street numbers get higher as you go North.
Fifth Ave divides east and west adresses
and NYC has no n/s adresses.
On the grid above 14th street,
20 blocks to a mile n/s
5 blocks to a mile e/w- so now you know why taxi's use 1/5 mile as a base fare
Once you get below the numbered streets- basically 4th- if you can see the Empire State Building it will always be North of you.

You got the North (higher streets) vs South (Lower street numbers) down.

The East west dividing line for manhattan is 5th avenue. Thus if an address is 16 East 40th street, it is between 5th and Madison (on the east side of 5th ave). If the address is 16 west 40th, it is between 5th and 6th. As a general rule the difference between each avenue is about 100 house numbers.

I'm a native New Yorker, but when I'm getting out of a station I'm not so familiar with, I have to check as well. I'll find the nearest corner, go to it, and check the numbers.

STREETS run east-west. The numbers increase as you move north (uptown). AVENUES run north-south. The numbers increase as you move west.

Of course, once you go downtown, and they switch to named streets, rather than numbered, it gets more difficult. Ask somebody, or check a map. I also advise knowing the area in advance, so you know which way you have to go when you get to a corner. That way, just find the nearest corner and you've oriented yourself. That's what I do. Good luck!!

If I can, I look for the Empire State Building. It's on 34th & 5th Ave. Then I look at the street signs & from that I know which way I want to go.
