Whose country? that isn't specific

Edit:
I should have known. Americans always assume they ae the only country in the world. Yahoo answers is full of people from the UK, Canada, India etc.

So when you said Our Country, it could have been anyone of those.

I do know that because I work in a full service humane society. Without sounding like Bob Barker, that's why it is so vital that cats and dogs are spayed and neutered. Of that 4 million, more than half of that population are cats. People do not get them fixed and they are allowed outside so they come home pregnant, kittens are born and the cycle continues.
Doing thorough and complete research on ANY animal is important! Can you afford to maintain this animal? Do you know the life expectancy? Can you afford to take it to the vet when it becomes ill?
The number one cause of death in an animal shelter is life. There are too many unwanted animals and not enough homes!

The US euthanizes more than four million animals yearly. There simply isn't enough homes to place all of the unwanted animals. There are way you can prevent having to surrender an animal:
~Research the breed before you bring it home. Its common for people to simply adopt or purchase a pet simply because its cute. (The cute rolly-polly tri colored puppy will eventually grow into a 150 pound independent, training needed, dominant St. Bernard.)
~DO NOT GIVE ANIMALS AS GIFTS! Thats great if you want to buy a pet as a gift. Instead of bringing it to them, take them to your local shelter and let him/her pick it out. Paying for the adoption is a gift in itself.
~Having a pet is very expensive. There's vet bills (expected like yearly exams and vaccinations and unexpected like fido decided to eat something out of the trash), dog food, pet supplies, grooming trips (if applicable), replacement carpet/furniture (if your puppy likes to chew), and definately a lot of time to properly train it. Do let this discourage you, this may simply mean that now is not the time to adopt and it saves you the heartach of having to give the pet up for adoption.
~Pets are awesome companions...but having a pet may mean you cant leave at a moments notice to go on vacation or take a trip. Or this may mean you'll need to make arrangements if your work schedule changes.

These aren't meant to discourage people from getting a pet, but taking a pet into your home and then having to surrender it can mean life or death to the one you call a member of the family.

Change starts with you.

Maybe they could start a diner next to the business. This would reduce disposal costs.
