We realized we've done enough damage and don't want to cause anymore so we try to avoid it.

If I made a woman cry because I did something wrong then I am there for her. If she is crying because she is trying to get her way and it is phony then I stand there and wait for her to grow up and act like an adult.
Sometimes women cry too much and you just overload. I had a girlfriend who cried everytime she saw roadkill. It made her think about what if it happened to her cat. After a while you run out of emotional energy and want her to learn to deal with it. This is why a smart man encourages his woman to keep her female friends. (Do you have any idea how much roadkill you see in the summer in Michigan?)

the testosterone answer is probably more correct than you know. Men aren't the comforters of the species. Females have traditionally been the ones that care, nurture, and sympathize with the ones that are hurting in some way.
Showing strong emotions isn't a masculine trait. Men tend to keep their feelings inside themselves.
But, keep in mind that even though men may be distant, it doesn't mean they don't care.

Not all men do. If my boyfriend and I have a fight and I start crying, he is usually right there trying to fix it. If I start crying over something, then he knows I'm really upset and that we need to stop blaming/pointing fingers, whatever and communicate

I do not know that they all do. But some do. Most men have great difficulty standing by when a lady cries. Especially if they seem to have caused the tears. Sometimes this is used as a weapon against them.

men are naturally less emotional than women. i know that this can be a hard thing to grasp sometimes, but men really dont understand women as well as they think. they dont realize when they cause us pain, and they dont see how upset they can make us. when we say "Were fine" we really arent, and they dont understand why we would say we were fine if we really werent.
to men, us women are a mystery and thats part of the joy in dating. we are constantly trying to figure one another out, but it is not an easy thing to deal with when they end up causing us pain. they keep their distance because when it comes to womanly emotions, they dont even know wehre to start. men often have trouble expressing themselves in a way taht will make us feel better, and though they may be sympathetic it is sometimes mistaken for coldness and them not caring.
but the truth is, they often do care. soemtmes seeing us cry is even wrose for them than it is for us. however, men are more reserved and are less likely to share their feelings with you, or even their close friends.
i guess this makes it inconvienent when we are upset and we jsut want our guy to talk to us ,but thats life. women have to rely on each other in these types of situatiions because we often know what to say to each other more than men know what to say to us. sometimes if you confront your husband or boyfriend about this, theyll try to be open and less distant, but im not making any promises.
i know sometimes it sucks, but god created men and women differently, and it is very easy to see this in emotional situations.
i dont know if this helps, but i guess its just a fact of life.
(by the way. if whoever your with wont listen to you, theyre are a lot of sensative guys out there who dont fit this stereotype and are very open listneners =] )

Because they don't like to see a woman cry and if they are the cause they feel guilty about it so they leave you alone.

I would say... they don't want people to think that they made a girl cry. I mean, what would everyone think of him, making girls cry? They'd be labeled. A bully for the most part.

Maybe he feels like a jack a@# for making you cry? It's called guilt. Or maybe he just doesn't care. Does he know that he made you cry? If he made you cry then maybe he's not worth your tears...think about that.

Because when a woman cries, it's one of the most uncomfortable, awkward, positions that a guy can experience.
