I have a 4 month old Westie puppy, but have been told by many people that they are prone to skin problems. He is on a beef, wheat and dairy free diet. Is there any thing else I can do to prevent him having problems with his skin?

hi, ... ya know i can't help but say how many times i hear of a dog having skin problems.... it's the diet!...diet...diet... i would recommend a pro-plan puppy formula.... chicken or lamb type... it's the same as an older dogs needs and it is easily digestable... beef would be ok. if the dog was over 1 1/2 years.... but it is harder for the animal to digest.... avoid dog foods red in color as blood is the main source of color/protein..... keep it dry food and maybe a little can food once a week ...if the problem is currently "bad" bathe the pup with an oatmeal shampoo..... once again don't go "cheapest" as a lil' more $ will help with quicker results.... also when the pup is old enough ,make sure to get him a flea treatment....not the topical type either! to see the results of a better diet will take a few weeks+ to see the actual improvement.... so don't be discouraged until that time has passed!.... hope this helps your situation....... rocky

White breeds are prone to skin allergies. There are allergy free dog foods on the market. You can take her to the vet to determine what she is allergic to but this is usually a long drawn out process and can be expensive. Therefore, I would try an allergy free dog food and if that doesn't clear it up between 2-3 weeks , I'd try another . If after 3 or 4 brands of this type of food I'd bring her to the vet because it would probably be contact dermatitis and the source would have to be found and removed.

Lisa,
Check with your vet as to diet & suppliments that they recommend for
a dog with inherent skin problems.
The addition of raw egg & vegetable oil to their food is very beneficial,
but you need to address this with your vet as to how often & how much.
Luck to you.

I have found that if you gently remove the skin and take it to a taxadermist, he will fix your dog permanently.Plus you dont have clean up after him .
