There's a lot of info on the web about it.....it falls into the larger category of anxiety disorders I believe, and can be closely related to depression.

Obsessions are thoughts that go on and on and on, and compulsions are the "need" to act in a certain way, like repeating actions over and over..

Men tend to get worse like things with counting...they might have to step in and out of the bathtub exactly 17 times (for example) before turning the water on.

Most people have milder forms- obsessive worrying, germ phobia, compulsive hand washing.

It's only a problem if it affects your quality of life in some way...there are lots of good meds to treat it.

OCD is psychiatric disorder that is classically grouped with the anxiety disorders.

In OCD, a person has obsessions (intrusive thoughts about a specific thing) that are intrusive. Examples can include obsessions about germs, cleanliness, safety, locked doors, car parts, anything.

The person will also have complusions (activities that correspond to the obsession). These activities are generally viewed as intrusive or abnormal. The person does these things to relieve the anxiety that is created by the obsession. Realize, however, that the person may consider them normal, but that bystanders may see them as intrusive. Examples of compulsions can include washing the hands or showering multiple times, checking the stove 15 times to make sure it's off, or any other activity related to the obsession. Generally, the activity must take up at least 1 hour of each day (not necessarily all at once), or be intrusive.

People throw the term OCD around very loosely. Talk with your doctor and see a psychiatrist to be diagnosed. There a many other criteria, and I've already taken up too much space. It is a very treatable disease, and nothing to be ashamed of. Best of luck.

it just means that you are obsessed with something, like washing your hands all the time because you think their dirty, or checking your front door is shut and locked several times because you think it isn't, or going round the house loads checking everything is turned off! basically, you can't control it. it's a habit which many people aren't aware of. it's an insecurity i think we all have in some way or another. for example i, although i have central locking on my car, i go around it several times checking it's locked! i know it's locked, but i can't help it. it's the same when i shut front door. i use the letter box several times, putting my hand through trying to shut an already shut door. it's weird.
