If you want to grill outdoors with a gas grill, purchase gas pipelines and roll your kitchen stove outside. Charcoal is great for a genuine cook-out. But mesquite wood is the best for smoked in flavor. Time to break out the Hibachi!

Gas, because I'm too impatient to wait for the charcoal - so for me the questions is gas or "don't grill" so I'll take the gas.

It's all a matter of taste.
Charcoal is a rather traditional method of BBQ, since gas is a newer inovation (relitivly speaking). It is also dangerous in the hands of "Men" (this is a statement not based in gender bias, but staticily most accedents occur to men aged 19-35, with at least 1 tatoo, who have been drinking all day and wish to impress their friends) These brave BBQ "gods" add way too much lighter fluid to the cold brickettes to save on cooking time and blow off thier eyebrows. Too much lighter fluid makes everything taste like, well, lighter fluid or Burger King, IMHO.
As I said gas grills are safer but they are also less portable, in most cases. Higher end, stationary, gas grills have opptions to make food taste like they have been cooked on a "properly" heated carcoal grill. The have ceramic plates that can be placed over the gas tubeing, that inturn can hold wood chips.
Most resturants use gas grills unless it is a specialty resturant serving "traditional" food on wood buring pits (BBQ and "Cowboy" places)

I prefer Charcoal.
Charcoal imparts more flavor to the food.
Gas grill is more convenient.

For charcoal, the first preference is Lump Charcoal which is made from chunks of hardwood.

Briquettes are okay, but they're made with fillers and you need to wait until they turn ashy grey before you can cook on them.

Use a chimney charcoal starter so you don't get the charcoal lighter flavor.

gas grills can break ... not very practical in that sense, but aside from that, you just can't beat the taste of grilled meat or veggies on a charcoal grill. the only thing that sucks about cooking on charcoal grills is that studies show that eating flame-broiled steak may raise the risk of developing breast cancer. if you don't believe me, go to the following site (i am always researching info about health so that am informed on current studies & info - my health is very important to me):

Well, charcoal grill is good if you like extra smoked flavor in things. You can add wood chips or didderent charcoals. Gas is good because there isn't a mess to clean up. I like them both.

charcoal, it feels good to know that you actually started the fire, not just took the easy way out, and it gives food a better flavor
